No…it’s not a hunting column. Well..maybe it is in a way, if you’re hunting for corporations that harbor an underlying anti-American sentiment. Cases have been made against many companies, but usually it has to do with what they sell and where it’s made. This one runs a little deeper than that, and it involves Target, the department store that we’ve all shopped in at one time or another.
I must be naive, I guess, because I’m constantly surprised by stuff that seems not to surprise other people. This is such a case. A friend brought to my attention that last Christmas, Target refused to allow Salvation Army bell-ringers in front of their stores. In and of itself, odd but not a deal-breaker for me. When it comes to folks who collect for different charities outside the entryway to major food or department stores, I admit I sometimes feel a little put out. It’s like the guy who jumps in front of your car to get the windshield, whether you want it washed or not, and then waits for his dollar. You feel like a jerk if you drive off, and feel “had’ if you donate. After all these years I still end up feeling “had”.
But the Target story runs deeper than bell-ringers. Dick Forrey of the Vietnam Veterans Association claims they recently asked the local Target to be a proud sponsor of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during their spring recognition event. According to Forrey, he received the following response from Target: “Veterans do not meet our area of giving. We only donate to the arts, social action groups, gay and lesbian causes and education.” Hmmm…sounds fishy, right? Why would a store go out of their way to alienate veterans?
Forrey, no doubt inspired at this point, sent an e-mail to Target U.S. Corporate Headquarters. Their response was just as firm. It is their national policy not to donate to veterans groups. As it turns out, they also will not allow Marines to collect for “Toys for Tots”.
Forrey dug deeper. Target, it seems, also would not allow families of employees who were called up for active duty in the military to continue their insurance coverage while their loved one was at war. Nice. All of this considered, Forrey was not surprised, as I was, to learn that Target is a French-owned company. Interesting, because, is there a country on the face of the planet that owes more to the American soldier than France?
I don’t know about you, but after considering all of the above, and the obvious additional fact that tons of profit in American dollars spent at Target end up in France…I can safely say that the last time I shopped at Target, was the last time I’ll ever shop at Target.
Karl,I will never spend a dime in a target store ever again…not that I did much shopping there…but thanks for the heads up….I only disagree with yo on one thing…the salvation army is a worthy cause…they do great work,and most of your donation actually helps out people and not the coffers of the organization…as a matter of fact,I usually seek them out….

yes Jimbo, I had seen that as well. I want to point out that when I was in retail we had to stop all soliciting in front of the stores for two reasons:
One: was the unions, if we let one group do it the unions were going to be allowed to solicit our employees
Two: again, you could let the groups you agreed with solicit and then evry nut in town would threaten to sue if you did not allow them…and I mean there were some NUTS!
so my company donated through the corporate office and we lent our clothes for fashion show funraisers or gave gift certificates for fundraisers.
I rendered an opinion based on an AP article I read. It seems there is question whether or not Target has any French ownership and now, apparently, Forrey is a disgruntled mooch. Still…nobody commented on the most important question here…a company that has done well here in America seems to have an anti-military policy.
More important for me, though, is that I have realized, after 4 years, I think of writing a weekly column, that my time is better spent writing comedy, especially as I become more and more involved in performing.
I’d be happy to kick around opinions and ideas, but to spend 5 days after each column responding to different versions of “the facts” has become way too time consuming.
The expectation, apparently, is that I should spend hours fact-checking an AP piece before rendering an opinion on it. I don’t have that kind of time, or frankly, that deep an interest.

When I read Forreys’ claims I looked into it because I found it incredible that a huge and successful corp. like Target would make such an incredibly stupid business decision.
I don’t trust corporations to act morally…but I do trust that those running them care about their own fat paychecks. …..An open anti-military stance that Forrey alleged would be blatantly stupid and possibly be the end of ones’ fat paycheck.

As far as the extent and demands of ” fact checking” goes. As a reader of over 4 years of columns I would say that there is a responsibility within reason that comes with any column or publication…for the following reason:
After reading your column and Forrey’s claims I was seriously considering boycotting Target….as a matter of conscience. That’s why I didn’t comment until I took the time to look further.
Upon doing so I discovered Forrey’s false claims…. which didn’t take much time or effort to find.
Now PUT YOURSELF in a Target employees’ position where you depend on your paycheck and customers like me to feed your family and pay your bills….THEN you are faced with false claims that put all that in jeopardy. …How would you feel? …I’d be downright bullsh*t.
The VFW rebuffed Forrey in a kind manner….I’m sure the Target employees aren’t feeeling so generous. ….”Military Service” is no license to destroy a Target employees’ livelihood with false claims, which could have easily happened if there were no “fact checking” …such as I did.
All that aside….if that was your last column…..congrats on over 200 great reads……..peace out….

Sorry you feel misteated. I think the fact that I wrote a weekly column for four years speaks to my interest…in writing. What I’m not interested in is being held to a higher standard than the NY Times, Washington Post, or the hundreds of other papers that run AP stories.
I have had plenty of folks who disagree, both here and at Red Hampshire, and my only requirement for responding to those is that the tone be civil.
You have seen those who clearly have only a “gotcha” mentality in their responses to my writingand are often not even interested in addressing the base point of an article. I’ll concede that the “facts” about Target ownership were in error, apparently, although I still wouldn’t bet on the average person being able to Google in- depth facts about the ownership of a company that large. Still..there does not seem to be any error in reading that the company policy is to not support anything military…veterans groups, etc. That is within their right, but not very patriotic.
More important to me, the “Target” piece made me sit down and evaluate the time required for a weekly column. An hour or so to write, then probably another few hours reading and responding to comments on two websites. At the end of the day, the cost/benefit is not there. My time is better spent with family, writing comedy which pays dividends, or managing business.
I’m grateful to everyone, including you, who took the time to read and comment. Nonetheless, it has turned into a weekly cage-fight, and that’s not something I’m willing to spend time doing.

Karl, the only reason I know the stuff about Target is because I spent years in retail and it was my job to know! As for the rest, I spend a little too much time on the horse bulletin boards and there are some experts there who have made googling an art form…LOL.
